As predicted, Saoirse Ronan (21) was nominated in the Best Actress category for her turn as Eilis in Brooklyn, facing competition against recent Golden Globe winner Brie Larson, Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence and Charlotte Rampling.
“I was asleep,” Ronan told the Today hosts shortly after her nomination was announced. “My mom ran in to me, tears streaming down her face, so I knew it was either good news or bad news, and it was the best news ever.”
If anything, Ronan’s nomination represents a homecoming of sorts — a “welcome back” from the Academy, which nominated her for an Oscar when she was just 13 years old.
Overall, it was a historic day for Irish film as homegrown talent was honoured with nine nominations.
